Highlights from Directions EMEA 2024

directions EMEA 2024

The Directions EMEA 2024 conference, held from November 6-8 in Vienna, was a landmark event for the Microsoft Dynamics 365 community. With over 3,200 attendees from 650 companies across 60 countries, the conference was a melting pot of innovation, collaboration, and forward-thinking strategies.

AI took center stage at Directions EMEA 2024, making it clear that Microsoft’s future vision for business applications is deeply rooted in artificial intelligence. Microsoft has made substantial investments in AI, integrating it broadly across Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform, and this was fully on display throughout the event. From autonomous agents in Business Central to enhanced AI-powered tools like Copilot, this year’s focus reflected Microsoft’s commitment to transforming business management and ERP systems through AI-driven insights and automation.

Autonomous Agents and AI Integration

One of the most talked-about topics was the integration of autonomous agents and Copilot into Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. These agents, part of Microsoft’s ongoing investments in AI, are designed to streamline workflows by automating complex, repetitive processes. With Microsoft Copilot Studio, you can already build your own agents that take advantage of Microsoft’s standard connectors to retrieve data directly from Business Central.

The first autonomous agent—Sales Order Agent—is set to enter public preview in late 2024 in the United States, with broader rollout planned for 2025. These agents leverage AI to help users manage tasks like order processing, freeing up human resources for higher-value activities.

Expanded Copilot Capabilities in Business Central

Copilot, Microsoft’s AI-powered assistant, is now more capable than ever in Business Central. The enhanced Copilot functionalities enable users to manage and automate business processes more efficiently, particularly in field service management. With Copilot’s predictive maintenance and automation features, companies can reduce downtime, improve customer service, and streamline service management workflows.

At Directions EMEA 2024, Microsoft unveiled the global expansion of Copilot in Dynamics 365 Business Central. Starting in January 2025, the public preview of Copilot will be available worldwide in English, with additional language support planned later in the year. This rollout reflects Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing user experiences through conversational AI, allowing users to interact with their ERP systems in natural language.

Advancements in Power Platform

This year’s event underscored the growing synergy between Dynamics 365 and Microsoft’s Power Platform, highlighting integration opportunities across Power BI, Power Apps, and Power Automate. New tools and templates allow partners to develop custom applications, dashboards, and workflows tailored to unique business needs, helping organizations leverage data-driven insights across departments. For instance, embedded Power BI capabilities provide visual analytics within Business Central, giving users actionable insights without switching between platforms.

79 Built-in Power BI Reports in Business Central

Another major update for Business Central is the addition of 79 built-in Power BI reports. This addition strengthens Business Central’s capabilities as a unified solution for ERP and analytics, making it easier than ever for businesses to access critical insights without the need for extensive report customization.

These pre-built reports are designed to cover a wide range of business functions, from finance and sales to operations and inventory management. With these reports, users can:

  • Gain Immediate Insights – Access ready-made analytics across key areas of the business, giving teams a head start on data-driven decision-making.
  • Save Time and Resources – No need to start from scratch. These reports allow companies to skip the lengthy setup process and dive straight into analyzing data.
  • Enhance Decision-Making – With real-time, visually-rich reports embedded directly into Business Central, managers and teams can make informed decisions quickly and confidently.

Enhanced Security Measures

With the increase in cybercrime and attacks, Microsoft placed a strong emphasis on enhanced security measures within Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform, addressing growing concerns about data privacy, cyber threats, and compliance. The Microsoft Secure Future Initiative, launched in November 2023, is an extensive program built to ensure that cyber security becomes part of every method, practice, and layer of the network.

For Business Central, Microsoft announced enhanced auditing capabilities to strengthen security and compliance. These new tools empower organizations to monitor and audit Business Central systems more effectively, supporting faster responses to security incidents, streamlined forensic investigations, and improved internal oversight. With automation playing a key role, these capabilities enable quick detection, response, and remediation, helping organizations meet compliance requirements with greater efficiency and precision.
